CRAIG GARDENS
2580 S Bascom Ave
San Jose, California
408-559-1907
The development provides 90 - one-bedroom suites on
a 1.47-acre site (61 DU/AC). It is conveniently located
near shopping on Bascom Avenue near Union in suburban
San Jose. In this complex, all suites and commons areas
are designed to meet the special needs of Seniors. Each
530SF air-conditioned living unit contains a full kitchen,
bathroom with a tub/shower, bedroom with walk-in closet,
generous living/dining room and a 60SF private deck
or enclosed courtyard. The site plan accommodates 64
parking stalls (.71 stalls per unit) with 4 H.C. stalls
located near primary entrances. Residents are provided
with free "Eco Passes" for public transportation.
The common areas include a Waiting Lounge, Reading
Room, Vending Room with Support Kitchen, Second Floor
Commons (with unit kitchen), and a Media Room with DSL
computer stations. The architectural design employs
a three-story entrance pavilion as the main focal point
in the complex. This element houses most of the common
and support facilities. Two residential wings radiate
from this pavilion paralleling their respective street
frontages thus creating a well-protected interior courtyard.
The Courtyard provides areas for outdoor gardening activities
including individual planting beds, a central plaza
with a small fountain, and a trellis and lawn area for
groups.
Multi-colored siding and trellised upper decks further
soften the "gateway" site and informal architecture.

Coast Builder's Conference "Gold Nugget Award of
